ACTION ALERT! GET MPs IN YOUR COUNTRY TO SIGN-UP TO THE PARLIAMENTARIANS' DECLARATION FOR SHARED RESPONSIBILITY IN SOVEREIGN LENDING

With the support of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank (PNoWB), Erlassjahr, Jubilee South, Latindadd, Afrodad and Jubilee USA, Eurodad launched the “Parliamentarian’s Declaration for Shared Responsibility in Sovereign Lending”  at the Annual Conference of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank (PNoWB) in Cape Town, South Africa in March 15-17, 2007.  The declaration calls on parliamentarians to support in-depth research and debate on issues of illegitimate debt and creditors' responsibility, and to initiate audits in their respective countries. Parliamentarians can be instrumental in building political support for the concept of illegitimate debt and shared responsibility and mainstream it as a key issue for development.

International Parliamentarians’ Petition for Democratic Oversight of IMF and World Bank Policies

PNoWB has been part of a group of civil society organizations and parliamentary organisations, supporting a petition for parliamentary oversight of the World Bank and IMF.  At the Spring Meetings in April 2005, ten MPs from five continents traveled to Washington to present the petition to the World Bank. The petition, aimed at ensuring that the IMF and World Bank respect the right of democratically elected representatives to set economic policies in their own countries, has been signed by over 1000 MPs from 46 countries.
