The Hague 2000
The Conference held in The Hague, Netherlands was the first meeting that brought together parliamentarians and the World Bank.
Some 50 parliamentarians from 26 countries in Europe and the developing world attended. Prominent speakers included James Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank; Eveline Herfkens, Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation and Hilde Johnson, MP, Norway and now former Minister for International Development.
The meeting was an opportunity for both parliamentarians and the World Bank to engage in an in-depth dialogue on the fight against poverty and to reflect on the role of parliamentarians in addressing development challenges.
The main outcome of the Conference was the decision to create the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank under the leadership of Mr Bert Koenders MP, Netherlands, Chair of the steering committee of parliamentarians which helped the European vice Presidency of the World Bank organise the Conference, sponsored by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
