Visit to Washington DC from 2 to 5 May

Board members will be in Washington for their annual retreat and consultations with the leadership of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund just a few days after their Spring Meetings. It will be the opportunity for the Board to meet with the Independent Evaluation Group, the Inter-American Development Bank and US Congresswoman and former PNoWB Chair Betty McCollum.

The Follow-up International Conference on Financing for Development will take place in Doha, Qatar, from 29 November to 2 December 2008. Member of the European Parliament and PNoWB Board member Ms. Corina Cretu will attend and share views in the PNoWB newsletter at the end of the conference.

World Bank calls on west to help relieve trillion dollar drain on world's poor

The WB published a report that shows how damaging the recession has been on international aid (overview / full text). Our members from donor countries should ask how their governments are responding to the report's recommendations; and partner countries should ask what their government's response to the report is. PNoWB 2008 Annual conference report

The report is now available online with a resolution designed for the Web.


Field visit in the DRC from 11 to 17 April 2009.

The delegation will comprise of 6 MPs from donor countries and 6 MPs from developing countries. They will focus on the role of MPs in the formulation of poverty reduction strategies, the use of natural resources and the interaction between governments and parliaments. At the same time, the program will include a capacity-building session for local MPs with the World Bank Institute.

New Board elected in Paris Annual Conference

A twelve-member Board was elected on Friday 21 November at the occasion of PNoWB 8th Annual Conference in Paris. It comprises of 5 members from donor countries, 3 members from Africa (2+1 additional member representing all countries from the South), 2 members from Asia, 1 member from Latin America and 1 member from the Middle East and North Africa.

Hugh Bayley, Yunus Carrim, Monica Frassoni, Janette Garin and Santiago Castro remain in the Board (Note: They initially stepped down but were re-elected). New Board members are Corina Cretu (Romania), Alain Destexhe (Belgium), Jeppe Kofod (Denmark), Fatou Ndeye Toure (Senegal), Marie-Rose Nguini Effa (Cameroon), Laode Ida (Indonesia) and Najeeb Saeed Ghanem Aldobai (Yemen).


PNoWB Board Elections

The Annual Conference will also be the occasion to re-elect the Board of Directors. The current Board proposes that the new Board should consist of eleven members, at least five of whom should come from the South and five from the North. A minimum of 30 percent should be women.
 
All members are encouraged to nominate candidates for election at the Conference. Please do send us your nominations conforming to the standard nomination criteria mentioned in the elections guidelines. Such guidelines provide for further information in connection with the election process. 
 
Please note that the closing date for nominations is Friday 14 November by which time all nominations should have been sent to the PNoWB coordinator, Zuleikha Salim Said (

The ballot and the results of the elections will be announced at the conference.
